Invasion of Desert Locusts in Eastern Africa

Eastern Africa has been affected by a severe Desert Locust invasion for several weeks.

Huge swarms threaten rural livelihoods and food security. How can this phenomenon be explained? How can it be prevented? What is the role of research?
