Laurent Granjon

IRD Research Director, CBGP Deputy Director

Granjon
My research activities refer to integrative systematics and population/community studies in African small mammals, especially in the context of the role of rodents in zoonose and as invasive species in West Africa.

Research activities

Following my posting period in Senegal (2008-2014), my current research activities concentrate on the following priorities:

- Long-term studies in (mainly African) rodent evolutionary systematics, phylogeny and phylogeography (subfamilies Murinae and Gerbillinae).

- Treatment and exploitation of data gathered during i) studies of differentiation mechanisms between sibling species of the genus Mastomys in captivity / semi-captivity conditions; ii) rodent community / population follow-up based on Capture-Mark-Release protocols; iii) small mammal inventories made in the frame of various programmes concerned by the success of invasive species and their impact on native communities and on human activities and health.

- Coordination  of the FRB/IRD research programme "CERISE" (SCEnarios of Rodent Invasion in the SahEl: Global change impact on the expansion of the Nigerian Gerbil and the House Mouse in Senegal; 2014-2017) implying various partners from France and Senegal, and aiming at i) updating occurrences of the house mouse and Nigerian gerbil in Senegal (capture and owl pellet data); ii) making predictions on the expansion of these two species based on modelling approaches; iii) disseminating information towards local stakeholders on these species and the associated potential problems in terms of damages on standing crops and stored products, as well as of human health via their role as hosts of various pathogens.
