Les pucerons (Hemiptera, Aphididae) comptent plus de 5000 espèces dont de nombreux ravageurs des cultures et des espèces invasives. Un facteur clé de leur diversification réside dans les associations mutualistes qu'ils ont établies avec les bactéries qui vivent dans leurs cellules.

Ces endosymbiotes métabolisent certains éléments nutritifs qui sont absents du régime alimentaire de leurs hôtes et peuvent être essentiels à la colonisation de nouvelles niches écologiques par les pucerons. Cependant, le passage à un mode de vie intracellulaire entraîne souvent une érosion rapide des génomes bactériens. Ce processus peut altérer les compétences métaboliques des bactéries et in-fine affecter le potentiel d'adaptation de l'hôte.

Cette thèse a pour objectif d’étudier la dynamique évolutive des endosymbiotes obligatoires nutritionnels d’une lignée de pucerons associée aux conifères. En utilisant les séquences des génomes des symbiotes bactériens associés à une soixantaine d’espèces de pucerons, nous allons: 1) reconstruire l'histoire des associations pucerons/symbiotes grâce à des analyses phylogénomiques; 2) caractériser les patrons d’évolution moléculaire chez différentes lignées bactériennes; 3) relier ces inférences génétiques à des caractéristiques phénotypiques et démographiques des endosymbiotes obligatoires.
