Phenoarch is equipped with a high-speed conveyor, an irrigation station, an environmental characterisation module, an imaging module and a low-speed growth and transpiration monitoring module.

  • High-speed conveyor system

- capacity: 1680 pots (28 lines with 60 pots each)
- speed: 9 m/min
- protection: IP67, acid resistant

  • Transpiration and growth at low flow

- The plants are weighed on 8 scales (Ohaus) connected to a database.
- 8 thermocouples are used to measure the temperature of the meristem.

  • Environmental characterisation

A network of sensors distributed in the greenhouse consisting of :

- 8 relative humidity and air temperature sensors (HMP45, Campbell Scientific)
- 8 light sensors (SKP 215, Campbell Scientific)

  • Irrigation

5 independent irrigation stations consisting of weighing terminals (ST-Ex, Bizerba, Balingen, Germany) and high precision irrigation pumps (520U, Watson Marlow, Wilmington, MA, USA)
The pumps have the following specifications :
- peristaltic pump
- maximum flow of 4 bar
- 1500 ml/min

Watering stations

  • Imaging

2 imaging booths compatible with 160 cm high and 100 cm wide plants :
- 1 3D visible imaging booth with top and side views (Sony DFW-SX900, Sony Corp., Tokyo, Japan) compatible with 200 cm high and 200 cm wide plants.
- 1 2D near infrared imaging booth.
One imaging cycle lasts between 30 and 40 seconds.

Imaging unit

  • Software

- The movement of the plants on the conveyor, the image acquisition and the irrigation system is controlled by a control PC and the LemnaLauncher software (LemnaTec, GmbH, Wüerselen, Germany).
- Environmental data acquisition is carried out using National Instrument programs.
- A PhenoArch database is under development to manage these environmental data, lemnatec image analysis or ad-hoc developed.

  • Computing Server

A computing server automatically performs the image analysis (DELL Power Edge M610). The data is hosted on a database server (DELL Power Edge R410, DELL MD1200) with a capacity of 13 TB.
