Biomimicry

Biomimicry

Biomimicry is not just the use of remarkable animal or plant properties. It is also a copy of the functions of microbial ecosystems to transform and recycle biomass in a sustainable environment. Indeed, the amazing performance of microbial ecosystems is the result of the co-evolution of a biotope (an environment, a process) and its biocenosis (a microbiota). This symbiosis has been built over millions of years through billions of tests. Our biomimetic approach aims to use this 'optimization' and to draw inspiration from nature  ‘results’  in terms of observations, processes, microbiota, interactions or environments.  Our examples of inspirations and copies are currently:

(i) the digestive systems of animals for anaerobic digestion,

(ii) the food chain of aquatic micro-organisms for energy production through the link between microalgae and anaerobic digestion,

(iii) the characteristics of thermophilic biotopes to understand and use the physiology of thermophilic microorganisms.
