Preparation of biobased synthons from Cévennes chestnut tannins for application to epoxy resins and fire retardants

The chestnut covers almost half of the wooded area of the Cevennes. This botanical species is known for the high density and hardness of wood as well as for a high resistance to insects. However, valorisation of chestnut trees is limited in the Cévennes for several reasons: i) strong land fragmentation, ii) difficult operating conditions due to the limited road network either in tonnage or in size, iii) quality of the chestnut tree. Today the exploitation of this resource is mainly focused on the agro-food sector for the production of honey, flour and jam from chestnuts. This activity is well established and locally recognized. Because of its low exploitation and its degraded health status, the future of the chestnut of the Cevennes is at an important turning point. To try to perpetuate the exploitation of this resource, it is urgent and strategic to explore new solutions to use chestnut tree by adding a value. Preliminary work of the project showed the presence of hydrolyzable tannins and galloylated condensed tannins in some organs / tissues of the chestnut. Specific applications, like new eco - materials and flame retardants, based on the families of molecules have been proposed with the aim of developing in the long term the industrial chain specific to the chestnut tree.
